Poirier – Soca Road EP
You can pretty much trust Poirier to deliver the goods. Once again he’s playing to his strengths with a carnival pile up of soca killers. These are going to have you following the next truck you see down the road waving your flag like you forgot its winter. Especially feeling ‘Bring It On’ with vocals from EJ Von Lyrik. The release is out today on Mixpak.

Sorie Kondi to SXSW
*Cross-posted at Africa is a Country
A small team of folks (including myself) are trying to help raise funds to get Sorie Kondi to SXSW in Austin, Texas this upcoming March. If you’re unfamiliar with Sorie, check out the many profiles done on him c/o Vickie Remoe, the BBC, and We Own TV.
His songs, like “Without Money No Family” tell stories of a tough life, so expectedly, Sorie would never be able to afford the ticket to come the U.S. on his own. We’re appealing for help to make it happen. Visit the Kickstarter page to make a donation. He’s got some great incentives up there too!
Also, look out for my own remix of “Without Money No Family” soon on my latest EP, African in NY.
Soundway sign Batida
Massive congratulations to our own Batida who have announced this week that they’re signing to Soundway Records to release their album internationally, the label home to so many of our favourite releases. The label, now branching out into some more modern styles of African music, Batida’s brilliant sampling of old 60′s Angolan semba tunes means they’ll fit in perfectly with the incredible Soundway catalogue. Head over to OkayAfrica and check a new Batida live video shot at Portugal’s Festival Med. And if you havn’t grabbed our own latest single release from Batida, Yumbala, grab it below along with remixes from A.J. Holmes & The Hackney Empire, Nozinja, and NaZaretH which made one of OkayAfrica’s top 11 singles of 2011 (insert proud face here).
Ben-ge Bangers
Madtraxx have just vaulted into my favorite East African producers slot (although Ogopa DJs tunes still jam, and Wawesh’s productions for Bamzigi are mad) Ita Wita was a good look, but I definitely slept on Skamaress. If you’ve been reading GBQ for anytime now, you should know we’re suckers for 70′s Rumba-Benga guitars over anything. This one’s perfect to mix in with Uproot Andy and my Champetaton remix of Sina Makossa (look out for it soon!)
Check out the long post over at Get Mziki for some background on the amazing tune and video!
La Makina del Karibe – ‘Maki Man’
A few months ago, A.J. Holmes played me his great remix of a champeta track ‘Maki Man’. Its finally been released along with some other banging remixes from our dudes Moroka, Daniel Haaksman and Hat & Hoodie. Like most Colombian champeta tracks it has a strong west african soukous flavour and can’t fail to cheer up your January with its sunny caribbean party vibes. Grab the whole release from Chasuma records and here’s the Daniel Haaksman remix for gratis.
Wiley – Dem Na Kill Pon Sunday (Heatwave special)
Just when I thought 2011 had been a bit of an average year for bashment, The Heatwave drop this IMMENSE riddim with Wiley coming on like a grimey Tenor Saw. I don’t know where this one sprung from, at a guess Wiley’s collaboration on Showtime but its going to make my NYE. Big up The Heatwave boys – Gabriel, Rubi, Benjamin D & Dan B for outstanding services to bashment. This is fierce.
Vee – ‘Stagalash’
A nice new Kwaito-Kwasa jam from Botswana’s Vee.

Masalacism presents..Décaler Balani
Been waiting for some time for this!
Balani is a little know style of Coupe Décaler out of Mali – To my ears it has a slightly more tribal and repetitive flow than the Ivorian style and often has the Balafon xylophone banging away under thundering drum machines. Like many other African dance music genres, it’s home is at outdoor neighbourhood street parties – in Mali called Balani shows. After a few unsuccessful internet hunts, I’ve only ever come across bits and pieces, so was excited to hear that the Masala dudes had a release planned. And it dropped today!
This excellent compilation features a selection of Balani artists and album profits go to Projet Danbe set up to support the travelling DJs in the scene.
The record is out now available on digital. Head over to Masalacism to purchase.
Isa GT’s Navidades con Etoro 2011
Our homie Isa GT is one of the hardest working djs we know, playing across the world, directing videos, promoting nights and releasing music on Man Recordings. She has now launched her own label, Etoro records, and for the third release she has curated the first of an annual series of Christmas compilations. She says..
In Colombia the holidays are a time for a lot of dancing and celebrating with family and friends. Etoro wanted to try and transpose this South American party vibes with this collection.
Christmas compilations might usually be old holiday songs, however Etoro wanted to create a different soundtrack for the season. Here you will find a collection of amazing songs incorporating stories, big beats and a lot of love.
Etoro has gathered friends and musical family to produce the soundtrack for your holiday celebrations and festivities.
