Liming Season: Vamanos Top 5 Soca 2014

Crazy excited for Carnival this year. It’s BETTER THAN CHRISTMAS. For me 2012 was an amazing year for soca with so many huge jams like Kerwin’s ‘Bacchanalist’, Swappi ‘s ‘Bubble on ah DJ’ and Lil Rick’s ‘Work’. 2013 wasn’t quite as strong, but this year the sun is out this week and Notting Hill Carnival is a road march away. Get your flags, get your rum and get ready to bruk out to some HUGE songs. These are my tracks of the season.

British producer Interface and Trinidadian percussionist LAZAbeam are Jus Now. Their remix of ‘Leh Go’ featuring vocals from Blaxx is an absolute monster out September 5th on UK label 3beat.

5Star Akil who i’ve never heard of has dropped my favourite soca track of the year with ‘From Meh Heart’, Anthemic and ridiculously infectious. So good.

Bunji’s ‘Truck On Di Road’ is pretty much the biggest soca song this year with an amazing video and a huge drop.

Ever blazing Fay Ann’s ‘Catch Me’ starts off like a slighty dodgy US pop track but then drops into a crazy jump up power track. I predict people will lose their shit over this on the floats.

Finally in the groovy category, a sweet vocaled hammer from the awesome Destra. Wine it.

For all the hits, grab this tight mix from Mighty Dragon.

This looks great. Spoek Mathambo’s new upcoming film of the hottest talent coming out of SA. He’s been dropping a bunch of excellent mixtapes featuring a heap of amazing music from his own productions to people like DJ Spoko.

AJ Holmes – 20 Years of Kwaito mix

Pic: Krisanne Johnson

Having shared the decks with AJ Holmes many times, I can safely say he loves his kwaito. This SA style never gets old and it’s totally infectious. His new killer of a mix is a great reflection of all those old school kwaito jams that destroy the dancefloor. This is what he had to say..Grab it below.

20 years ago – on the 27th April 1994 – ‘Nelson Mandela took office as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
The removal of the political and economic sanctions greatly transformed the South African music industry. In the backdrop of a transforming South Africa, Kwaito took shape in the township Soweto’.

For me this mixtape marks a personal 10 year reflection; since I first heard this mid 90’s / early 00’s Kwaito – South African Hip Hop – music. Which became a big part of the 2004 Summer sound track for me and my friends, after my friend João Orecchia returned from South African the previous year with a plastic bag filled with cassettes.

I was recently having a bit of a spring clear out and come across these cassettes. As much as I was really into them at the time; I somehow wasn’t surprised to discover that they sound even better to me now then they did all those years ago!

I think it’s time to ‘re- discover’ – or even ‘discover’ for the first time (you lucky person if that is the case!) – this amazing dance music. 20 years after some of it was made and – to me – this music sounds as relevant as ever.

I would love to go to a club that played this music. So if anyone wanted to invite me to play a set of hissy old Kwaito cassettes from this gold era of South African dance music; I’d be well up for it!

I’ve creamed off some of my favourite tracks to make this mixtape. Most of which can be bought on the great compilation – Kwaito: South African Hip Hop CD

So here’s to a ‘better life for all’!

A.J. Homes – 20 Years of Kwaito mix

Mandoza – 50/50

Jimmy B – Make Em Bounce

TKZee – Magesh

Spokes ‘H’ – Wara Wara

Aba Shante – Come get me

Brenda Fassie – Qula

Arthur – Kaffir
