Poirier – Soca Road EP Preview by Mixpak

A small team of folks (including myself) are trying to help raise funds to get Sorie Kondi to SXSW in Austin, Texas this upcoming March. If you’re unfamiliar with Sorie, check out the many profiles done on him c/o Vickie Remoe, the BBC, and We Own TV.

His songs, like “Without Money No Family” tell stories of a tough life, so expectedly, Sorie would never be able to afford the ticket to come the U.S. on his own. We’re appealing for help to make it happen. Visit the Kickstarter page to make a donation. He’s got some great incentives up there too!

Massive congratulations to our own Batida who have announced this week that they’re signing to Soundway Records to release their album internationally, the label home to so many of our favourite releases. The label, now branching out into some more modern styles of African music, Batida’s brilliant sampling of old 60′s Angolan semba tunes means they’ll fit in perfectly with the incredible Soundway catalogue. Madtraxx have just vaulted into my favorite East African producers slot (although Ogopa DJs tunes still jam, and Wawesh’s productions for Bamzigi are mad) Ita Wita was a good look, but I definitely slept on Skamaress. If you’ve been reading GBQ for anytime now, you should know we’re suckers for 70′s Rumba-Benga guitars over anything. This one’s perfect to mix in with Uproot Andy and my Champetaton remix of Sina Makossa (look out for it soon!)
