DJ Charly de Chicago
My favourite label releasing new music from Mexican artists is Choles Records. Let me tell you why.
Last year Choles released an exceptional cumbia EP from DJ Charly de Chicago. Each track bounces so hard I have to quote the official press release as they describe it way better than I can…
‘Dj Charly de Chicago’s sound goes hard and fearlessly into the villa with a stupid-real attitude not to be fucked with. Shout outs. Pitched and chopped vocals. Rebajadas. Each cumbia’s chug bops along, maxing out your monitors into the red zone, where late-night caguamas make you forget that keeping everything in the green is the safe way to go. The energy’s too strong. The beat kicks. The sonideras move between technical playfulness and an older familiarity. Their charm is in their party-ready wepa that still stays organic and close to the originals, like Choles Records’ first and future releases. With your head moving left and right, all you want is everything to be as loud as possible, for your neighbors to wake with terror, for Dj Charly de Chicago to tell them the music’s not stopping until mid-morning.’

Lemonade’s Five Favorite Mixes for Summer – | MTV Hive
[...] I found this mix on Ghetto Bassquake, which is a site that a couple friends of ours contribute to, and it’s a Central Mexico tribal, house mix that sounds precolonial. There’s flutes and Aztec chanting and it really works for sweltering hot summer. The beat is so insistent the way it swings and keeps coming at you; it’d be good for a really rowdy party.
